MAGIC: THE GATHERING

Selected imagery that I created for the MAGIC: The Gathering CCG (Collectible Card Game) between 1996 and 2010. I had done some other game-related work for Wizards of the Coast prior to getting the call up to the "big leagues" with the ALLIANCES set in 1996. The game is legendary for its popularity and the immense diversity of the art that has been produced for all the thousands of game cards over the years. My history with the MAGIC game is very much a journey of experimentation with different media. My first card (Storm Elemental) was done with airbrushed acrylic paint and colored pencils. Immediately thereafter I transitioned into oil paints, which took me a fair # of years to feel truly comfortable with (not having ever taken any oil painting classes). MAGIC truly does represent an evolution in my style, and it can be tracked from the first sets of images to the very last. Somewhere near the midpoint of these years working with the art directors, my media changed to digital, and then again to a hybrid form of traditional and digital media.
